چکیده

[1] Accurate estimation of spatially distributed chlorophyll content (Chl) in crops is of great importance for regional and global studies of carbon balance and responses to fertilizer (e.g., nitrogen) application. In this paper a recently developed conceptual model was applied for remotely estimating Chl in maize and soybean canopies. We tuned the spectral regions to be included in the model, according to the optical characteristics of the crops studied, and showed that the developed technique allowed accurate estimation of total Chl in both crops, explaining more than 92% of Chl variation. This new technique shows great potential for remotely tracking the physiological status of crops, with contrasting canopy architectures, and their responses to environmental changes. Assessment of Canopy Chlorophyll Content Retrieval in Maize and Soybean: Implications of Hysteresis on the Development of Generic Algorithms

Canopy chlorophyll content (Chl) closely relates to plant photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen status and productivity. The goal of this study is to develop remote sensing techniques for accurate estimation of canopy Chl during the entire growing season without re-parameterization of algorithms for two contrasting crop species, maize and soybean. These two crops represent different biochemical mec...

Remote estimation of gross primary productivity in maize and soybean: from close range to satellites

In this study, a model for estimating crop gross primary production (GPP) using the product of a chlorophyll-related vegetation index (VI) and incident photosynthetically active radiation (PARin) was developed and tested. This model, which may be based entirely on satellite data, was tested using Landsat and MODIS data for GPP estimation in both maize and soybean, crop types that differ in leaf...

Agricultural and Forest Meteorology

Crop gross primary productivity (GPP) is an important characteristic for evaluating crop nitrogen content and yield, as well as the carbon exchange. Based on the close relationship observed between GPP and total chlorophyll content in crops, we applied a model that relies on a product of chlorophyll-related vegetation index and incoming photosynthetically active radiation for remote estimation ...

Scaling up Semi-Arid Grassland Biochemical Content from the Leaf to the Canopy Level: Challenges and Opportunities

Remote sensing imagery is being used intensively to estimate the biochemical content of vegetation (e.g., chlorophyll, nitrogen, and lignin) at the leaf level. As a result of our need for vegetation biochemical information and our increasing ability to obtain canopy spectral data, a few techniques have been explored to scale leaf-level biochemical content to the canopy level for forests and cro...

Retrieval of Biophysical Vegetation Products from Rapideye Imagery

The accurate estimation of canopy biophysical variables at sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolutions is a key requirement for operational applications in the agricultural sector. In this study, recently available multispectral RapidEye sensor data were tested for their operational suitability to estimate canopy biophysical variables in the Italian Campania region. For this purpose, two...
